Valentine's Day Musings

Blog post #444 of 365

I am a romantic but not in the sense most would consider romantic. Like the giving of flowers or candy on Valentine's day is not romantic to me. Candlelight dinner is not romantic to me. To me romance is random acts of kindness to the person you love. Being thoughtful is key. Coming home from a long day and unexpectedly having fresh sheets on the bed or dinner made is way more romantic to me than celebrating one day in a crowded restaurant or with cheesy stuffed critters or a box of chocolates, I can probably only eat a few of (allergies.) Romance is surprising me with something I want or need for no specific reason other than you love me. Romance is stepping up and not lingering in the background.

It upsets me when people say 'I don't celebrated Valentine's day' because I do. I make sure everyone I love knows it. I wish them a good day, remind them they are loved and try to do something nice for them if I can. But to me on Valentine's day the best thing is to be reminded I am loved and remind others they are loved as well. Simple I know but it is what I feel the day is about.

This is my Valentine's day I woke up and messages or texted about 2 dozen people. Telling them they are thought of and loved. Then I plan to go shopping and make a nice meal for the family. Very romantic huh? That is it because for me the most romantic day shouldn't be Valentine's day. Romance should be a day or time specific to the people involved and not on or to the day shared by the entire commercialize world!

McDonald's and the Olympics

Blog post #443 of 365

Dear sponsors sometimes a little 'sponsored by' line is better than a logo that looks cheap and silly.

Especially because you know most of these athletes are not hitting the drive through every day and the hopeful athletes watching are not hitting the drive through. And your special Olympic cups are not inspiring. Sorry McDonald's you lost on this one.

Pivotal Moments

Blog post #442 of 365

I think about the lifetimes put into this one moment. I see the passion and dedication it takes to get to this pivotal moment and then to have it dashed just makes me feel so deeply for the loss.

I wonder if it makes them more dedicated to go out and do better or if it just makes them regret the time they spent making the one moment seen world wide and caught on film. I would hope they would never regret the time over the mishaps.

When you think about the speed and heights so of these falls occur one has to be in awe of their ability to get up and move forward.

I am so proud of the athletes and their dedication.

Olympics

Blog post #441 of 365

I have always been a huge fan of the Olympics. I was a particular fan of the summer games. So many of those sports appealed to me. I find it interesting that they add games. I have no idea what the criteria are but this year they added a few like team sliding and slope style boarding. Fun!

I can just say I am obsessed with watching this year. I have recorded every event available and have watch all of them. Okay some on fast forward but I have also re-watched a few segments here and there. It may be I finally enjoy the work involved. Not just the athletes but the coaches, the volunteers, the organizers, the politics and everyone you don't see or normally think about.

Gotta to watch.

Birth & Celebration

Blog post #440 of 365

Last week my cousin became a grandma for the first time. I remember that feeling. When you see your child become a parent and watch them interact with their baby. There are no great words to describe it. One of those things you just have to experience to fully get it.

I secretly wanted this baby to come on the 7th. Only because I would remember it better. two of my brothers and Kate have birthdays this month with only the 7th open between them.

Celebrating births and the living is my favorite thing. I love babies. Then every year we get to remember them and celebrate them in a big way. One of my brothers complained his birthday is nearly always plagued with rain. Well this year we are in a drought and frankly the rain is welcome, prayed for even.

We can celebrate a life any time, and we do. Most of us have our parties on the weekend anyway. Birthday parties are one way we celebrate life but we celebrate in other ways as well. We celebrate milestones all along the way. First tooth, walking, potty training, first day of school, wins, graduations, new jobs, weddings, retirement, and eventually a culmination of them all funerals.

Granny Jill, welcome to the club. M. R., welcome to the world. Ron, Kate, and Dave, I hope you are still celebrating because I am.

Losing People

Blog post #439 of 365

I have a friend who after conquering several kinds of illnesses finally lost her battle. Her biggest fear was passing on a holiday or someone's birthday. We had a long talk about the inconvenience of death and how you would think the Lord would take into account the people who love the one who has passed on. We both figure He knows what He is doing and we will be let in on his secrets in His time.

Then we talked about how people say they 'lost' someone. She said we aren't losing anyone as long as we hold our memories of them in our hearts. She made me promise to keep her memories with me always and the funny thing is every time someone says they have 'lost' someone I think of her. It is a clever way of her to remind me of the good times we shared as friends.

The sad part is for some they did lose. They lost time by holding grudges, being angry and in other ways did not take advantage of the opportunities they had or could have had to spend time together.

There are those too who never get the chance to spend time together. Real time I mean. In the last year a few young friends had stillbirths. Stillbirth and having any child die have to be the hardest trials anyone would have to endure. I never understood the mourning process of miscarriage or stillbirth until watching a few close friends go through it. That is the real lost people. The parents of the child they won't see in this lifetime.

I hope you won't mourn the loss of the people you love. I hope you will take the opportunity to love and spend time with the people who mean the most to you. Later I hope you carry their memory in your heart for all the days you have remaining, appreciating every moment you had together as the gift it truly was.
